Trans Day of Remembrance 2024
Trans Day of Remembrance is a day to honour and remember the lives of transgender, non-binary and gender-nonconforming people who have been murdered due to transphobia and anti-trans violence.
Acts of transphobia are examples of gender-based violence. They can be seen through sexual, physical, mental and economic harm inflicted on trans people publicly and privately. Through hateful rhetoric, discriminatory policies that restrict the lives of trans people, and direct forms of violence, this community faces many barriers on a daily basis.
Trans individuals are some of the most vulnerable in society. In addition to experiencing forms of discrimination when accessing education, healthcare, employment and housing, they also face higher rates of poverty in comparison to cis-gender people. In 2021, the poverty rate for trans people was 12%, higher than the national average of 8% (Statistics Canada). One in five non-binary people live in poverty, two times more than the national average.
At Adsum, we are continuously learning and unlearning ways to better support trans people who are a part of the community and are accessing our services. Today, we remember those we have loss, reflect on ways we could have better supported, and find ways we can take action to address the micro and macro forms of violence hindering trans individuals' ability to thrive and flourish.
Housing and Trans Rights are Human Rights! We ALL must play a role to ensure all our community members can live without shame and fear but with pride and safety.
