The Alders by Adsum
Every person has the right to a safe, secure home. In addition to providing safe shelter, a new home can also reinforce a woman's sense of self-worth and provide increased dignity.
The name of our newest property, The Alders by adsum, is based on the symbolic properties associated with the water tree, which nurtures fish in the shelter of its root system. Additionally, alder leaves are rich in nutrients that actually enhance the quality of water and soil as they begin to breakdown, making 'The Alders' an appropriate name for a building designed to provide women, families and trans folks with supportive housing.
The Alders is comprised of 10 apartments. Since opening in May 2011, 14 women and children have moved into new homes at The Alders. These tenants would otherwise be staying at shelters, couch-surfing, living in unsafe conditions and struggling to get by day-to-day. The Alders is a great example of Adsum's partnerships - capital funding was received through a federal grant from the Homelessness Partnership Strategy; a provincial grant under the Affordable Housing Program; a very generous private gift; and, a mortgage taken by Adsum.
Laundry and shower facilities are also available at The Alders for use by women and youth who are experiencing homelessness.
