The Successful Canadian Woman’s Dinner
October 30, 2008, 6 – 9:30 pm
Pier 21, Halifax
Tickets are $125 ($1250 for a table of 10)
Aside from providing support to some of the most vulnerable people in our community, Adsum also looks for opportunities to provide education about homelessness and the root causes of poverty. The Successful Canadian Woman’s Dinner is our way of reaching out to the wider community while at the same time, raising money for the work that we do.
This year’s honoree, Dr. Roberta Jamieson, is a powerful trailblazer for women. Among other achievements, she is the first Aboriginal woman in Canada to earn a law degree and the first woman elected Chief of her home reserve which is the largest First Nations community in Canada. Roberta was also the first woman appointed Ombudsman for the province of Ontario; in serving as Ombudsman, Roberta made the Office a real alternative for people who had been treated unfairly by the provincial government. Her influence was also felt at the international level; she has traveled all over the world helping countries develop mechanisms to monitor their own governments.
Roberta was made a member of the Order of Canada in 1994 and in 2003, was rated one of Canada’s most powerful women, along with – that very same year – Justices Louise Arbour and Beverly McLachlin of the Supreme Court of Canada, Roberta Bondar (astronaut), Myra Freeman (then Lieutenant Governor of NS) and Sheila Fraser (Auditor General of Canada). Just last year, as a Judge for the CBC in its quest to identify the seven wonders of Canada, Roberta had this to say: “Pier 21 is the personification of the promise that our country holds. It is a metaphor for Canadian diversity, the welcome point that our country has for all cultures.”
Additionally, the Successful Canadian Woman's Dinner provides an opportunity to put a human face on homelessness. To this end, a woman who has used Adsum's services will speak about her own experiences on the street and her struggle to find support in the community.
On the lighter side, the event is accompanied by a Silent Auction that features a great range of items.
